Ne-Yo, real name Shaffer Chimere Smith, is an award winning American R&B singer, dancer and record producer. He began his career as a songwriter and gained prominence after his hit “Let Me Love You”, which was performed by Mario, topped the charts. Following the release of this single, Ne-Yo received an invitation to meet the producers of Def Jam Records and landed a contract with this label. His first solo album, entitled In My Own Words, reached the stores in 2006. It featured singles “Sexy Love” and “So Sick”, both of which peaked within top 10 on nearly every radio chart in America. His following studio work, Because of You, was released in the following year and by the end of 2008 Shaffer has finished his third album- Year of the Gentleman. Ne-Yo net worth is currently estimated at $16 million dollars.
Ne-Yo was born in Arkansas, in a family of two talented, yet unnoticed musicians. After his parent’s divorce the boy was left to live with his single mother. Barely able to support her child in Camden, his mother decided to relocate to Las Vegas. Although this never sleeping city did not appreciate her music, one could say that this move was not worthless at least for one reason: it set her son on the career path which eventually boosted Ne-Yo net worth to millions of dollars.
Shaffer started his professional career while still studying in Las Vegas Academy. During his senior years he joined a starting R&B group Envy and adopted pseudonym “GoGo”. The band dismantled by the time Ne-Yo was 18 year old and the teenager continued his career as a songwriter.
For a couple of months in 2000 it seemed like Ne-Yo is just about to get his breakthrough as a solo artist- he landed a deal with Columbia Records. For reasons unknown, Ne-Yo’s contract was terminated right before the release of his debut album and his singing career was stalemated once again. In order to earn some extra money, Ne-Yo had to sell the rights to the song he planned to release as his own lead single, “That Girl”. This song, recorded by Marques Houston and released with his album HM, topped the charts and turned Ne-Yo into one of the most wanted songwriters in American music industry. After this breakthrough Ne-Yo net worth growth shifted to the high gear.
In 2006 the young artist finally got the chance to release his own solo album, In My Words. Due to the popularity of such singles as “So Sick” and “Sexy Love”, the album immediately topped Billboard 200 and sold over 300 thousand copies during the week after its release. The sales from this album are responsible for a good bulk of Ne-Yo net worth.
